I'm not going to tell you any more about the plot because that might spoil your enjoyment of what is a very fine novel. Suffice it to say that if you've ever been truly, deeply in love with someone who may not love you back with the same intensity then you are going to identify readily with April and her friends.
If you're looking for something to do on a rainy weekend, my suggestion is to get a glass of wine, curl up and read this book.

April has a troubled past she can't seem to escape. She is haunted by visions of a horrible car wreck in which she appears to cause not just the death of her passengers, but her own death as well. She begins seeing glimpses of events from decades ago. Things get weirder when she falls in love with a man she recognizes only from one of her prior peeks into the past. Are love and happiness meant to be for April, or will it simply be "deja vu all over again?"
My Deja Vu Lover comes across as a breath of fresh air in a crowded genre. What the book does (and does well) is put a refreshing spin on paranormal romance. Books like these inform us that not all paranormal romances have to involve glittery vampires and lustful werewolves. April is very much a human being, not just in how she is depicted, but also from her emotions to her shortcomings. She and the other characters are fleshed-out, believable, and endearing. They are "normal" people working in a subtly paranormal setting, which makes us feel for them all the more. Bravo!
The flashback scenes harkening back to the 1920's were my favourite part of the book. I would have liked for it to be more closely meshed in with the story, as sometimes the story veered off without mentioning the reincarnation or past life. I was positively humming along in the part where the main character visits the home state of her past life alter ego; just loved that part, with pleasant visits to a down-to-earth part of the state.
I enjoyed the camaraderie between the core group of four buddies--two guys and two gals--each paired off. But I wasn't too sure that such relationships--both romantic and as a temporary reprieve in between other affairs--would work or be valued. This is sort of like a "friends with benefits" storyline, but I thought only coming-of-age adults would experiment like this. Also, it amazed me how idiotic women can be in accepting tired excuses for men's affairs, over and over again (sorry, but in this novel, women were always in this predicament, never the men).
The "past life lived" story is what sets it out from the rest of romance stories. Without it, this would be an okay story. I always tried to veer back to this flashback story wherever possible.
My Déjà vu Lover by Phoebe Matthews is a contemporary romance about April, a twenty-something woman who relives flashbacks about an alluring boyfriend in a past life.
April is an out-of-work store clerk with three inseparable best friends named Cyd, Mac, and Tom. Her life is going along just fine until a terrifying vision of a car crash that killed a 1950s Hollywood starlet drops April into this woman’s last moments. At the most inconvenient times, more flashbacks plunge April into the starlet’s life before the crash. The actress’s love-struck visions swirl around her infatuation with a married leading man.
Her three friends humor April, convinced that she is making things up. But the ongoing visions reveal the starlet’s name. Tom flies April to the actress’s hometown where April discovers that this starlet was a real person. The four friends write it off to coincidence.
A man who must be a reincarnation of the starlet’s lover walks into April’s life. She cannot resist this modern day married man, and her life becomes stuck on the same path as the doomed starlet. This deadly déjà vu loop is destined to claim April again.
My Déjà vu Lover is a page-turner story about a likable heroine. Past lives and reincarnation have a fresh treatment here, and the plot delivers a nice mix of mystery and forbidden love. Author Phoebe Matthews has a talent for creating believable, modern-day characters. The reincarnated lover is the kind of guy that mothers warn their daughters about, but alas, they are just irresistible.
Readers who love time travel romances would enjoy My Déjà vu Lover. Just remember mother’s warnings about those seductive leading men.
